Banarasi sarees, chosen with care in Varanasi
For more than two decades Chaitanya Shree has helped families in Banaras and beyond find the right saree for every occasion. Browse cotton sarees for everyday wear, dyeable sarees made for your own colour, pure silk for festivals and rich Katan silk for the wedding day.
Shop Banarasi sarees by fabric
The fabric decides how a saree feels, how it drapes and where it belongs. Start with the one that suits your day.

Cotton Saree
Soft, breathable and easy to drape, a Banarasi cotton saree is made for long days, office wear and summer pujas. It keeps the woven borders and buttis of Banaras in a fabric you can wear every week.

Dyeable Saree
Woven in a natural, undyed shade, a dyeable saree can be dyed to match a lehenga, a family theme or a colour you cannot find on the shelf. The zari work stays bright while the ground takes on your chosen colour.

Silk Saree
Pure silk Banarasi sarees have the soft sheen and graceful fall that festivals and family functions call for. Look for zari buttis across the body and a richly worked border and pallu.

Katan Silk Saree
Katan is woven from twisted pure silk threads, which makes the cloth dense, smooth and lustrous. It is the classic bridal Banarasi, heavy enough to hold its pleats and lasting enough to pass down.

the year our journey began
A Banaras saree house built on trust
Chaitanya Shree began in 2000 in Golghar, Maidagin, in the heart of old Varanasi. The aim was simple: to offer good Banarasi sarees at an honest price while staying close to the weaving tradition that the city is known for.
Over the years the shop has grown the way most Banaras businesses do, through word of mouth. Mothers who bought their own wedding sarees with us now come back for their daughters, and many customers who have moved away still order on WhatsApp.
Every saree on our shelves is picked by hand. We check the weave, the zari and the finish, and we are happy to send close-up photos or a video before you decide.
What makes a Banarasi saree special
Varanasi has been weaving silk for centuries, and Banarasi sarees are among the most loved textiles in India. A few things set them apart.
-
Zari work
Gold and silver coloured zari threads are woven straight into the fabric, not embroidered on top. That is why the motifs shine from within and last for years.
-
Motifs of Banaras
Flowers, creepers, paisleys (kairi), and small buttis scattered across the body are classic Banarasi designs. A jaal is a net of motifs that covers the whole saree.
-
A GI-tagged craft
Banaras brocades and sarees carry a Geographical Indication tag, which recognises them as a craft that belongs to Varanasi and its neighbouring districts.
Which Banarasi saree for which occasion
Buying for a date on the calendar? Here is how most of our customers choose.
- Wedding
- Katan silk with heavy zari. It looks rich in photos and holds its drape through long ceremonies.
- Reception
- Katan or pure silk with an all-over jaal, so the saree does the talking and jewellery can stay light.
- Haldi and mehendi
- Cotton or a light silk in yellow, green or orange. Comfortable for a long daytime function.
- Festivals and puja
- Pure silk with buttis and a bright border. Traditional, but easier to carry than a bridal saree.
- Matching a theme
- A dyeable saree, dyed to the exact shade the family has planned.
- Gifting
- Pure silk or cotton in a classic colour. Easy to wear and suits most ages.
How to care for your Banarasi saree
A Banarasi saree can last for generations if it is looked after well.
Dry clean silk
Silk and Katan sarees should be dry cleaned. Cotton sarees can be hand washed gently in cold water with a mild detergent.
Wrap in cotton or muslin
Store the saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth. Plastic traps moisture and can yellow the fabric.
Refold every few months
Change the folds from time to time so the zari does not crack along the same creases.
Keep perfume away
Spray perfume before you drape the saree, never on the zari, and air the saree in shade after wearing it.
Questions we are often asked
How can I tell if a Banarasi saree is handwoven?
Turn the saree over. A handwoven Banarasi usually shows small floats and knots behind each motif, and the edges are slightly uneven. A powerloom saree looks flat and perfectly uniform on the back. For pure silk, you can also ask for the Silk Mark label.
Which Banarasi saree is best for a wedding?
Katan silk with rich zari work is the traditional choice for the bride because it is heavy, lustrous and holds its drape. For haldi, mehendi or a daytime function, a cotton or lighter silk saree is easier to wear for long hours.
What is the difference between Katan silk and pure silk?
Katan is a type of pure silk woven with twisted silk threads, so the cloth is denser, smoother and heavier. A regular pure silk Banarasi is lighter and softer, which makes it easier to carry at festivals and family functions.
What is a dyeable saree?
A dyeable saree is woven in a natural, undyed shade so that it can be dyed later in the colour you want. It is a good choice when you need a saree to match a lehenga, a family theme or a very specific shade.
Can I see more photos before I buy?
Yes. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 91405 55307 with the saree you like and we will send close-up photos or a short video of the weave and zari.
