The Craft

How Weavers Make a Banarasi Silk Saree

Every Banarasi saree passes through many skilled hands before it reaches you. In fact, the Banarasi sari is one of India's best-known handloom traditions. Here is the journey, from thread to finished drape.

On the handloom, the weaver joins silk and gold zari one line at a time.
  1. The design (naksha)

First, the artist draws the motif by hand on graph paper. Each square stands for a thread. Therefore, the artist decides every flower, vine and border before weaving begins.

  2. Punching the cards

Next, a card maker turns the drawing into a chain of punched cards. On the loom, these cards then tell the jacquard which threads to lift for each line of the pattern.

  3. Dyeing the silk

After that, dyers wash the raw silk yarn and dye it in the chosen colours. Once the yarn dries, they wind it onto reels and bobbins for the loom.

  4. Setting the warp (tana)

Then the weaver stretches thousands of lengthwise silk threads and fixes them on the loom. As a result, this base decides the length, width and fall of the saree.

  5. Weaving with zari (bana)

Now the weaver passes the crosswise thread through the warp with a shuttle. At the same time, gold or silver zari builds the butis, the border and the rich pallu.

  6. Finishing

Finally, workers trim loose threads by hand and check the saree from end to end. After that, they polish and fold it.

How long does it take? A weaver can finish a simple design in about two weeks. However, a heavily worked Banarasi silk saree for wedding can stay on the loom for several months.
